Hotels‚ lodges in Mustang entry point displaced

Hotels and lodges at the entry point to touristic district of Mustang have been displaced following the expansion of roadways.
Hotels and restaurants set up at Ghansa, Lete, Kowang and Marfa and at Dana and Tiplyang in Myagdi targeting trekkers have no way except for closing the business because of the access by motorable roads.
The number of trekkers visiting these hotels has decreased due to the direct road facility to Jomsom. These sites are considered as main route from Annapurna, Nilgiri, Tukuche peaks to Dhaulagiri Icefall.
Hoteliers here have started shifting their businesses to Pokhara, Kathmandu, Beni and Jomsom. After direct facility of motorbale road to Jomsom for the past five years, local hotels are in crisis, said tourism entrepreneur of Lete, Prem Tulachan.
The number of foreign tourists coming on trekking has drastically gone down after the facility of motorable road, he said. “I am really sad after my business with an initial investment of over Rs. 10 million is witnessing a low number of guests,” he said.
Similarly, proprietor of Kabin Hotel at Dana said that before the construction of motorble roads, around 15 to 30 guest used to come to his hotel in a day. But, these days, he receives hardly one to two guests in a day.
Of 70 hotels and lodges here, some 20 to 25 have been displaced, according to Chairperson of the local Tourism Entrepreneurs’ Committee Shanti Tulachan. Most of the hoteliers here have started swtiching to vegetable and livestock farming.- RSS

Trekking before trekking

ANGELIQUE VAN LEEUWEN
Choosing Dhunche as starting point for a trekking trip is perfect when going to Gosainkunda or Langtang Valley. Less optimal in monsoon time though. So it proved for 34-year-old French traveller Florent Avella, who went on a four-day journey, starting September 1, to digitally capture the famous Gosainkunda lakes. Learning about the religious significance in addition to the amazing natural setting, this was a must-destination for him, being a professional travel photographer. The journey was interesting, but he never got to see the lakes.

Gosainkunda Lake situated in Langtang area (file photo)
It seemed straightforward. He booked the short hiking trip with an office in Thamel. Clear instructions given for the bus to Dhunche, permit and accommodation arranged, and the guide would be waiting for him. The next morning, they would start to walk from there, fresh and full of energy. All handled in good order at a competitive price. It would only take a seven-hour bus trip to the starting point. Normally it does. However, the monsoon decided differently this year.
The bus ride turned into a full-size trekking adventure, matching the hike he supposed to start the day after. Hours into the journey the bus stopped and it soon became clear that everybody had to abandon it with all their belongings. A landslide made it impossible for the bus to continue. Sure, a landslide is a common occurrence during monsoon time, but this one was one of larger scale. Everybody had to walk for at least a few kilometres, wading through newly developed rivers and following narrow mud paths, to a point where the next bus was waiting for them. Part of travel adventure. However, it felt less adventurous when everybody had to get off bus number 2 and hike for another few kilometres, to get into waiting bus number 3, and everybody felt completely exhausted after another long journey by foot, meeting up with final bus number 4. This had turned into serious unplanned hiking before the planned hiking trip.
Did this damage happen overnight? Nobody in Thamel seemed to know about it, or failed to mention it. Clearly it was not important enough for the daily news. No people died during the landslides. Only road damage occurred, on a large scale. Even local people did not seem to be informed or they took it as the usual burden that coincides with monsoon season. Turning around is not an option. Two people on motorbikes did not even decide to return to where they came from, but chose to drag their bikes up the slippery and narrow paths kindly helped by locals, taking the same route as the bus passengers had to take, oblivious to any risks of personal injury or bike damage. Clearly getting there was more important, no matter what.
As for Avella, he cut his trip short, knowing that two days later he had to do this unplanned hike again on his return to Kathmandu. Thinking of the local people, let’s hope that they do not have to embark on this journey on a regular basis, as the landslides on the route Kathmandu-Dhunche are not likely to be cleared very soon. Nature has done too much damage here. Stay informed before visiting this region at this time, or you might also be trekking before trekking! -THT

TAAN launches new trekking programmes at Humla

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) is preparing to operate trekking at Humla.
TAAN had identified five new destinations — Taplejung, Gorkha, Solukhumbu, Dolpa and Humla. The association has already started trekking at Taplejung, Gorkha, Solukhumbu and Dolpa and now it is preparing to launch trekking programmes at Humla.

“We have been receiving a positive response to the new trekking trails, and we are sure we will get a good number of trekkers when we start operating the trail at Humla,” said chief executive officer of TAAN Ganga Ram Pant.
According to Pant, TAAN in coordination with SNV-Nepal, is developing new trekking trails to promote tourism. Among the total tourist arrivals in the country, about 35 per cent arrive for trekking. In 2011–2012, the trekking business earned a total foreign currency of $ 50 million.
To promote trekking and facilitate trekkers, TAAN and Nepal Tourism Board have already reduced the trekking charge by about 72 per cent for trekkers from SAARC nations. Earlier, trekkers from SAARC countries had to pay Rs 700, while the new trekking charge is Rs 200 per trekker.
Whereas, the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card rate for trekkers from countries other than the SAARC region is still the same –– $ 10 for an individual TIMS card and $ 20 for groups.
To guarantee safety and security of trekkers, it will also operate TIMS software within a month.
The TIMS agreement, signed in 2010, was recently reviewed by both NTB and TAAN. According to the revised agreement, the joint fund of TIMS will only have representatives from NTB and TAAN. Earlier, the TIMS joint fund also included a representative from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.
“There are various issues related to TIMS but currently we are focusing on the TIMS software,” he said. TIMS is a system developed by TAAN, and NTB is the authorised organisation for collecting taxes through it. However, the involvement of other players in distributing TIMS card and collecting taxes has created unnecessary problems.
The software was developed to ensure security of tourists and check illegal operations. It will make sure tourists at different trekking routes are safe. Under it, a trekker has to fill up a form with all the personal details and programmes throughout the stay, and the information will be recorded in the TIMS software.
