Tourist arrivals up 47% in May at Nepal


Tourist arrivals via air in May increased by 47.1 percent, as compared to arrival figures of May, 2010. According to Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), a total of 39,179 foreign tourists entered the country during the period.

With strong growth in May, total arrivals over the first five months of 2011 have reached 208,137, an increment of 22.9 percent as compared to figures of the same period of 2010.

All major markets recorded positive growth during the period. The South Asian segment registered a positive growth of 71.5 percent with strong contribution from India (78.4 percent). Similarly, arrivals from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan increased by 26.2 percent, 24.1 percent and 31.6 percent respectively. Likewise, arrivals from China increased by a whooping 101.1 percent. Arrivals from Malaysia (134.3 percent), Thailand (115.7 percent), Singapore (78.3 percent) and South Korea (94.1 percent) also recorded strong growth.

However, the number of visitors from Japan declined by 15 percent during the period.

European market observed positive growth of 10.5 percent in May 2011. Arrivals from France, Germany, Italy and Spain increased by 37.9 percent, 6.3 percent, 34.8 percent and 4.3 percent respectively. Similarly, arrivals from Australia and New Zealand grew by 53.2 percent and 129.7 respectively.

Arrivals from US and Canada also recorded encouraging growth of 19.4 percent and 13.5 percent respectively.
