PM Lee to visit New Zealand & Australia
SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will make an official visit to New Zealand and Australia from 6 to 13 October.
In New Zealand, he will call on Governor—General Jerry Mateparae and Prime Minister John Key.
Mr Lee and New Zealand’s defence minister Dr Jonathan Coleman will also visit the Republic of Singapore Navy frigate RSS Stalwart, which is in New Zealand for Exercise Lion Zeal.
After going to New Zealand, Mr Lee will visit Australia, where he will stop over at Melbourne, Rockhampton, Canberra and Sydney. He will meet the Singapore community in Melbourne.
In Canberra, Mr Lee will meet Australian Governor—General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott and key members of the Australian Cabinet.
Mr Lee and Ms Gillard will also witness the signing of an MOU on combating transnational crime and developing police cooperation between Singapore Police Commissioner Ng Joo Hee and Australian Federal Police Commissioner Tony Negus.
Mr Lee will also observe the Singapore Armed Forces troops taking part in Exercise Wallaby 2012 at Shoalwater Bay Training Area.
Mr Lee will end his visit in Sydney where he will meet Premier of New South Wales Barry O’Farrell and deliver an address at a luncheon hosted by the Asia Society Australasia Centre.
During Mr Lee’s absence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, the Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, will be the acting prime minister.
This will be Mr Lee’s second official visit to New Zealand and Australia.
His last official visit to there was in June 2006. He will be accompanied by Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Foreign Affairs and Community, Youth and Sports) Sam Tan, Members of Parliament Mr David Ong and Mr Edwin Tong, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
